On October 3, 2019, Ugandan pop star and presidential aspirant Bobi Wine tweeted a video denouncing the government's ban of his trademark red beret for people who are not in the armed forces.
The ban, according to a spokesman for Bobi Wine's People's Power Movement, was due to 'fear' and 'panic' from the government.
However, Bobi Wine insisted that wearing the beret is not a crime, saying it is a symbol of the 'desire for change'.
He also emphasized that the Uganda People's Defence Forces beret has a different badge, and that the red beret is a symbol of resistance for his party.
As seen in the video, a woman wearing the beret stated that it is 'a symbol of hope for so many Ugandan women, young and old, who cannot effectively participate in the democratic process of our country.'
