Published on October 3, 2019, Maina Kageni's sentiments sparked a heated debate among Kenyan men and women.
According to Maina, some Kenyan men are 'bewitched' for refusing to spend on their loved ones, yet boasting of their wealth.
He recalled an instance where a man removed a Ksh 100,000 bill at a restaurant, only to claim he was broke when asked for pocket money.
'I think you (Kenyan men) are bewitched,' Maina said. 'You go out with a man, he asks for the bill and he removes a wad of Ksh 100,000. But when you ask for money, he responds that 'hii ni ya kubuy vitu kwa hardware.'
His comments came after some men defended themselves, saying that a man who doesn't spend on his partner is not broke, but rather, the partner is not worthy of his money.
However, Maina's sentiments were echoed by many women, who shared their own experiences of being asked to 'sahau hii story ya kuitisha pesa' (forget the story of asking for money) by their partners.
