Construction of the Mombasa County Stadium is underway, with a projected completion date of December 2020.
Located at Mvita Estate in Mombasa, the stadium is being built at a cost of Sh1.7 billion and will have a 12,500 seater capacity.
Speaking after launching the ground breaking exercise on Tuesday, Mombasa County Sports CS Munyoki Kyallo said the project will be able to host international matches once ready.
According to Kyallo, the project has been in the planning stages for over a year, with the architectural design being factored in before awarding the tender to Turkish-based firm Stara Supplies & Construction Company.
The stadium will have a football pitch, an indoor arena capable of hosting 1,200 people, and a swimming pool, among other facilities.
Upon completion, the stadium will be a FIFA standard facility and will be able to host national team matches as well as club's international tournaments.
