Published on October 2, 2019, Bill Gates reflects on his first meeting with Aliko Dangote at an event in New York, where they discovered a shared passion for global health and entrepreneurship.
Both men started successful businesses in the late 1970s and later established foundations focused on improving health and education. The Dangote Foundation is the largest such organization in sub-Saharan Africa.
Their foundations have since collaborated on a joint commitment to reduce malnutrition in Nigeria, with a $100 million pledge over five years, announced in 2016.
Malnutrition is a significant health inequity, responsible for nearly half of all under-5 deaths in Nigeria and around the world. It can also lead to reduced quality of life and increased mortality rates.
Through food fortification, their foundations aim to address malnutrition by adding micronutrients to staple foods and condiments, making it easier for families to access essential nutrients.
By working together, Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote are making progress in Nigeria, a critical step towards improving health in sub-Saharan Africa.
