Published on October 1, 2019, a woman's three-month stay at Sunset Paradise Holiday Homes in Mombasa has turned into a contentious rent dispute.

Caroline Kirimi checked into the three-bedroomed apartment on May 25, 2019, with her newborn baby and a house help, and was granted a Sh10,000 discount on her Sh150,000 monthly rent.

However, the hotel management claims Kirimi has defaulted on her payments, which have now accumulated to Sh420,000.

According to the hotel official, Kirimi promised to pay after withdrawing the money from the bank but never did.

"We were duped into believing her, considering she had a young baby. Before we realised, she headed to the rent tribunal," said the hotel official.

When reached for comment, Kirimi denied defaulting on any payment, stating, "There is no issue here and I dare you to write anything and we shall meet in court," before hanging up.

The Business Premises Rent Tribunal has allowed Kirimi to remain in the apartment pending the hearing and determination of the matter.

The hotel management has denied allegations of harassment and intimidation, and the case is ongoing.
