On October 1, 2019, an outbreak of an unknown disease was reported at Starehe Girls', prompting the isolation of 52 students.
The students, who were suffering from high-pitched cough and fever, were isolated for observation and samples were taken for further tests.
According to a statement by the school administration, the students were isolated as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease.
"The Starehe Girls' community confirms that there has been an increasing number of cases presenting with an unknown cause of high pitched cough, sneezing and low-grade fever among students," the statement read in part.
The school administration informed parents, guardians, and stakeholders that they were working with the Health Ministry and the department of Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (IDSR) to establish the cause of the disease.
