On September 30, 2019, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party received Sh6 billion from the government, a move that critics claim cements the assertion that the party and its leader have received favor in the eyes of those in power.
The funds, according to ODM's financial statement, are tagged as what has accrued from what the government owes the party. ODM has claimed that the money was part of the accrued debts which the state owed it from the political parties funds.
However, political pundits question the timing of the money, which seems to have been unleashed to boost Raila's machinery against Tanga Tanga.
ODM's financial situation appears to be the only substantial asset the party has, alongside the recently acquired building along Loyangalani Drive in Lavington, Nairobi.
The new acquired Chungwas house cost Sh170 million, amidst reports that Party Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen and Finance Director Joshua Kawino are said to have been enraged and uncomfortable with (fired) Director of Political Affairs Wafula Buke for discovering that the two top officials received Sh40 million as kickback after the purchase of the new ODM headquarters.
