On September 30, 2019, chaos erupted at Kamiti Maximum Prison in Kenya, with violent confrontation between warders and inmates.

The trouble started when some inmates resisted the surrender of contraband, sparking a violent response from the prison authorities.

Despite the presence of cameras and hawk-eyed guards, contraband continues to be smuggled into the facility, with warders and managers suspected of being involved in the racket.

Previous mop-ups have uncovered a range of contraband, including laptops, mobile phones, and hard drugs, which inmates use to swindle unsuspecting members of the public.
