On the evening of Sunday, September 29, 2019, a white Toyota Probox slid off a ferry in Likoni, Mombasa county, and plunged into the Indian Ocean.
According to eyewitnesses, a woman and a child were seen inside the vehicle moments before it went into the water.
Police stated that the car was among the last items to be loaded onto the Mv Harambee from the mainland side of the Likoni channel.
A witness claimed to have thrown a life saver at the woman and child as the car started to reverse, but it was too late.
Likoni Sub County Police Commander Benjamin Rotich confirmed the incident, adding that there might have been four people in the vehicle including a child.
By the time darkness fell, neither the car nor the occupants had been retrieved, leading people to fear the worst.
