On August 29, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta's motorcade was obstructed by two drivers attached to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

The drivers, Antony Wangamba and Joseph Njue, were driving vehicles without number plates, according to court documents.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi of the Nairobi Traffic Court, Mr Wangamba and Mr Njue denied the charges.

Mr Wangamba was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser J200, while Mr Njue was driving an upgraded LX570 Lexus version of the J200.

Both drivers were released on bail, with Mr Wangamba being released on Sh50,000 bond and Mr Njue on Sh100,000 bond.

The hearings of their cases have been set for separate dates in November.

The arrest and prosecution of the two drivers is one of the many woes facing Mr Sonko, who is fighting accusations of illegally issuing garbage collection tenders and is being investigated by the Kenya Revenue Authority over tax evasion claims.

Mr Sonko has set in motion the process of naming a deputy should he be required to step aside as the boss at City Hall.

He said, 'We currently have a crisis, but we are making plans to come up with a name, which we will then forward to the Assembly for approval.'
