On September 29, 2021, the State Prosecutor, Catherine Mwaniki, appeared in court to address concerns over the mental state of media personality Jacque Maribe in the Monica Kimani murder case.

According to Mwaniki, Maribe's lawyer, Katwa Kigen, had previously indicated that his client was experiencing depression due to the charges she faced.

Mwaniki expressed concern that Maribe may not be mentally stable to follow the case proceedings and requested that the court determine her mental fitness.

She argued that all accused persons must be declared fit to stand trial, and that a mental assessment would be necessary if Maribe was found to be depressed.

Maribe's mental state has been a topic of discussion in the trial, with a witness testifying that he received unusual text messages from Kimani on the night she passed away.

The witness stated that he met Kimani at her home on September 18, 2018, and that she had told him she had two visitors, a Lebanese man and a security guard at State House, Nairobi.

He also testified that he received a strange love message from Kimani at 11 pm, asking him to go and help her sleep, but that she did not respond to his calls or texts.
