On July 27, 2021, Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua was released on a Sh 12 million cash bail after pleading not guilty to corruption charges at the Milimani Law Courts.

The MP is alleged to have received Sh 7.5 billion, leading to six counts of offences including money laundering, conspiracy to commit corruption, conflict of interest, fraudulent acquisition of public property, and acquisition of proceeds of crime.

Gachagua is charged alongside eight other individuals, including William Wahome Mwangi, Anne Nduta Ruo, and David Reuben Nyangi, as well as M/s Rapid Medical Supplies, who did not appear in court.

One of the charges against Gachagua and his co-accused is that they fraudulently acquired Sh 6,000,000, part of the payment for the supply of Dialysis machines to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital in December 2014.

The court also heard that between January 2015 and June 2019, Gachagua indirectly received Sh104, 821,205 from the Bungoma County Government and engaged in transactions to conceal the movement of the money, which he believed to be proceeds of crime.

Additionally, the court found that between 2013 and 2020, Gachagua fraudulently acquired Sh 7, 330,011, 265.80 to three bank accounts domiciled at Rafiki Micro-finance, knowing that the money was proceeds of crime.
