On July 17, 2021, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of Evans Juma Wanjala, a 30-year-old man from Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, who is accused of defiling and murdering five girls between 2019 and 2021.
According to the DCI, Wanjala confessed to committing the crimes, which involved luring his victims from different locations in Moi's Bridge Ward, Soy Constituency, and then assaulting, defiling, and strangling them.
The cases were reported between December 31, 2019, and June 15, 2021. The victims were aged between 10 and 15 years old.
Wanjala's alleged victims were identified as Linda Cherono, 13, Mary Elusa, 14, Grace Njeri, 12, Stacy Nabiso, 10, and Lucy Wanjiru, 15.
He reenacted how he executed the crimes and led detectives to the scene of every murder, where charred remains of the murdered minors had earlier been recovered.
Wanjala was wanted for other crimes and an arrest warrant had been issued against him in 2019. He was out on bond after being accused of defiling two girls in Kibwezi in 2018.
He will be arraigned on Monday, July 19, 2021.
