October 14, 2021, marks a concerning day for the Kenyan justice system as Masten Wanjala, a 20-year-old self-confessed child killer, escaped from police custody at Jogoo Road police post in Nairobi.
According to a statement by the police, Wanjala was cooling his heels at the police post when he might have slipped from the cells the previous evening.
It was not until this morning that the officer on duty alerted his seniors after noticing that the murder suspect was missing.
"This was noticed when they were taking over the report office and cell sentry duties. They informed the D/ocs who was in the report office minuting cases in the OB," reads the report.
Wanjala was supposed to take plea over the murders of 13 children, whom he confessed to have eliminated, on the same day of his escape.
The 20-year-old had taken detectives to different scenes in Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, and Bungoma, where he dumped the bodies of his victims.
The police have launched a manhunt to re-arrest the prisoner.
