On the surface, Liz Cheney appears to be a stalwart defender of her principles, but a closer examination reveals a more complex individual.
During Donald Trump's presidency, Cheney voted in line with him more often than Representative Elise Stefanik, who is positioning herself to replace Cheney in leadership, according to a New York Times article published on May 6, 2021.
Cheney's voting record also shows that she joined her Republican colleagues in voting against Trump's prior impeachment, despite his severe compromise of the United States' stature on the world stage.
However, Cheney's past actions have also been subject to scrutiny, including her overwrought opposition to President Barack Obama and her entry into the 2014 Senate race, which some saw as an attempt to curry favor with the Tea Party.
Moreover, Cheney's fervent disapproval of marriage equality in 2013, which was at odds with her father Dick Cheney's support for her lesbian sister Mary, has been largely forgotten in recent analyses of her character.
