Employees Demand Immediate Payment of Salary Arrears and Investigation Into Labour Conditions at Embu Health Facility
Newsroom Updated 4 min read
A complaint and demand for payment of salaries has been filed by current and former employees of Granton & Dolly Nursing Home in Embu County, setting out claims of unpaid wages stretching over several months and demanding immediate intervention by national and county authorities to compel settlement of all outstanding dues.
In the letter addressed to officials in the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Ministry of Interior and National Administration, COTU-Kenya leadership under Francis Atwoli, the National Assembly Labour Committee, Embu County Government, and the facility’s director and administrator, the workers state they have continued providing medical services while receiving no pay for extended periods, creating what they describe as sustained financial distress among staff.
The employees say that salaries remain unpaid for up to four months, with some workers exiting employment while still owed accumulated wages and terminal dues, leaving households unable to meet rent obligations, basic needs, and essential living costs tied directly to their monthly income.
The complaint states that staff continue to deliver services at the facility while compensation is withheld, describing a breakdown between labour provided and payment issued, with workers insisting that the arrangement contradicts basic employment obligations and standard labour expectations.
The workers also point to the facility’s operations model, noting that patients are required to make payment for services at the point of care, while employees responsible for delivering those services remain unpaid for completed work, creating what they describe as a direct imbalance in service delivery and wage settlement.
In their demands, the employees have called for an immediate investigation into labour conditions at the facility, a physical inspection of operations in Embu County, and full payment of all outstanding salaries and dues owed to affected workers without further delay.
They have further demanded enforcement action where labour violations are confirmed, alongside protection for employees who have raised grievances from intimidation, dismissal, or any form of retaliation linked to the complaint.
"COMPLAINT AND DEMAND FOR PAYMENT OF SALARIES OWED TO WORKERS AT GRANTON & DOLLY NURSING HOME – EMBU COUNTY
TO: The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Health – Kenya
The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Labour and Social Protection – Kenya
The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Interior and National Administration – Kenya
The Secretary General COTU-Kenya Atwoli Francis
The Chairperson Labour Committee, National Assembly of Kenya
The Governor Embu County Government
Mr. Antony Charoge Mutwiri Director/Administrator Granton & Dolly Nursing Home -Embu county
We, the undersigned/former employees and current workers of Granton & Dolly Nursing Home located in Kiriari and Kathangariri, Embu County, wish to lodge an official complaint and demand immediate intervention regarding non-payment of salaries for work already performed.
The said health facility is headed by Mr. Antony Charoge Mutwiri. Despite employees faithfully working for several months, many workers have gone unpaid for up to four (4) months. Repeated peaceful requests and appeals for payment have not yielded any positive response from the management.
The situation has caused severe suffering among workers, some of whom have been forced to leave employment without receiving the salaries they rightfully earned. Many employees are struggling financially, unable to meet basic needs, pay rent, support their families, or access medical care due to the continued withholding of their wages.
It is unfair and inhumane that workers continue rendering services while their lawful salaries remain unpaid. Ironically, patients at the facility are reportedly required to pay before receiving treatment, yet employees who provide these services are denied their rightful earnings.
We therefore respectfully call upon the relevant authorities to urgently:
1- Investigate the labour practices at Granton & Dolly Nursing Home.
2- Visit and inspect the premises in Embu County.
3- Ensure all affected workers are immediately paid their outstanding salaries and dues.
4- Take legal and administrative action against any violation of labour laws and workers’ rights.
5- Protect current employees from intimidation, victimization, or unfair dismissal for raising these concerns.
We believe that justice, fairness, and respect for workers’ rights must prevail. Employees deserve to be compensated for the work they have honestly performed.
We humbly request urgent intervention from all concerned authorities to ensure that justice is served and workers receive the monies owed to them without further delay.
Yours faithfully, Affected Employees DATE: 06/06/2026"
