Newsroom Updated 2 min read
President William Ruto has approved a series of promotions, appointments, and deployments within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), ushering in significant leadership changes across the military following recommendations from the Defence Council.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Head of State announced the appointment of Major General John Maiso Nkoimo as the new Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army.
Major General Nkoimo takes over from Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who has retired from military service after a distinguished career in the Kenya Defence Forces.
Before his elevation, Nkoimo served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, where he oversaw military operations and administrative functions across one of the country's key military regions.
His promotion places him among the senior-most officers in the Kenya Army and positions him to play a central role in strategic planning, force development, and national security operations.
In a related appointment, President Ruto named Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah as the new Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force.
Before the appointment, Brigadier Farah served as the Base Commander of the Laikipia Air Base, one of the country's most important military aviation installations.
The promotion is expected to strengthen leadership within the Air Force as the military continues to modernise its capabilities and enhance operational readiness.
Changes at Central Command
The latest military reshuffle has also resulted in changes within the Kenya Army's Central Command.
Brigadier William Kamoiro has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed the new General Officer Commanding Central Command.
He takes over the position vacated by Major General Nkoimo following his appointment as Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army.
As GOC Central Command, Major General Kamoiro will be responsible for overseeing military operations, training, personnel management, and security coordination within the command's area of responsibility.
