A somber mood has engulfed the National Police Service and residents of Kwale County following the sudden death of a police officer who collapsed while on duty during the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir.

The officer, identified as Hassan Juma Moyo, reportedly collapsed moments after taking part in the ceremonial march-past at Wajir Stadium on Monday, June 1. The national event was attended by President William Ruto, senior government officials, security chiefs, and thousands of members of the public.

According to reports, Moyo had successfully completed the parade alongside fellow officers before suddenly collapsing at around 9:05 a.m. Witnesses said the incident occurred shortly after the march-past segment of the celebrations, triggering an immediate response from fellow officers and medical personnel stationed at the venue.

Emergency responders quickly rushed the officer to Wajir County Referral Hospital, where doctors and medical staff worked to save his life. Despite sustained efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:00 a.m., less than an hour after he was admitted.

Preliminary reports indicate that Moyo suffered a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. The medical emergency is said to have struck without warning, leaving colleagues and spectators shocked.

News of the officer's death was later confirmed by Fatuma Masito, who expressed condolences to the family and community affected by the loss.

“It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the death of Hassan Juma Moyo, a police officer who dedicated himself to serving our nation until his last breath,” she said in a statement.

Masito described the officer as a committed public servant who died while carrying out his duty to the nation, extending sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and residents of the Golini Lake area in Kwale County.

The National Police Service had not issued an official statement on the incident by the time of publication, but the tragedy has reignited conversations about the welfare, health, and working conditions of security officers assigned to demanding national events.

The incident is not the first of its kind. Over the years, several officers have collapsed during state functions and ceremonial events. In December 2025, an administrator collapsed during a graduation ceremony at Embakasi National Police College attended by President Ruto. During the 2021 Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu, a Kenya Navy officer also fainted while participating in the event.

More recently, a sergeant attached to the Presidential Escort Unit died after collapsing at State House Nairobi in April 2025, while another police officer's sudden death at State House Mombasa in February 2026 prompted investigations.

The latest tragedy is likely to intensify calls for regular medical assessments, improved welfare programs, and enhanced health monitoring for officers deployed to physically demanding assignments.

As family, friends, and colleagues mourn Hassan Juma Moyo, questions are once again being raised about how best to safeguard the well-being of the men and women tasked with protecting the nation.
