Former Media Boss Exposes Industry Rot ¶
Former TV47 CEO Eugene Anangwe has spoken out about the toxic nature of the media industry in Kenya, citing the mass firing of journalists as a major issue.
On July 4, 2020, Anangwe took to Twitter to express his concerns, stating that the media industry in Kenya had become a 'dirty game' where journalists were used and dumped after their usefulness had expired.
He explained that passion and love for telling stories had blinded many journalists from seeing the red flags, leading to their exploitation by media houses.
Appealing to Kenyans to check up on their friends working in media, Anangwe urged them to reach out to colleagues who had lost their jobs or quit due to toxic work environments.
Since exiting TV47, Anangwe has focused on his Anagwe Mentorship Program, which aims to support young journalists in their careers.
Before joining TV47, Anangwe had worked in Rwanda for 11 years, where he gained valuable experience in the media industry.
Despite the challenges facing the media industry in Kenya, Anangwe remains optimistic about the future, citing the potential for TV47 to cut a niche for itself in the competitive market.
Abubakar Abdullahi Mohammed, the 25-year-old acting CEO of TV47, has vowed to live up to the name of the station and broadcast untold stories from all 47 counties in Kenya.
