On June 29, 2020, the National Tourism Crisis Steering Committee submitted a report to the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Najib Balala, detailing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism industry in Kenya.
As part of the report's recommendations, the ministry is planning to reduce charges for key tourism products in a bid to attract visitors and revive the sector when normal operations resume.
According to the report, a phased marketing approach will be implemented, targeting domestic visitors, regional visitors, and international visitors, as well as revising prices for tourism products in Kenya.
Other strategies include presenting tourism resources geographically, capturing experiences and information, packaging tourism products, digitizing travel and tourism, promoting community-based tourism, fighting misinformation, and adhering strictly to laid-down health protocols.
Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has expressed support for the measures, stating that they will promote sector recovery and secure Kenya's market share in the global market.
The government has allocated Sh11.3 billion to the tourism sector, which could help the sector bounce back to profitability following the coronavirus outbreak in Kenya.
