On June 12, 2020, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) wrote a protest letter to the Council of Governors chairperson Wycliffe Oparanya, urging him to invite Governor Sonko to the flagging off ceremony.
The ceremony, scheduled for July 1, 2020, in Kajiado County, will see 50 United Nations Volunteer (UNV) health experts deployed to 14 target counties for a period of six months.
As the United Nation’s Volunteer champion for the year 2019, Governor Sonko was recognized for his outstanding contribution towards the achievement of sustainable development goals at local, national, and international levels through volunteerism.
UNDP has invested approximately Sh56 million (558,800 USD) towards the UNV support programme, which aims to assist national and county governments in effectively responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 50 UNV health experts will be deployed to Busia, Garissa, Kajiado, Nairobi, Kakamega, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kisumu, Machakos, Mandera, Migori, Taita Taveta, Uasin Gishu, and Wajir counties, which were initially identified by the Ministry of Health as the most vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic.
