With just a few weeks to go before the World Under-20 Championship, the Organising Committee has made significant progress on the technical equipment and pitches to be used for the event. According to technical director Ibrahim Hussein, all equipment is already in Kenya and is awaiting clearance so that it can be inspected.

“Things are moving really fast because we only have a few weeks before the World Under 20. On the technical side, the equipment is already in Kenya and we hope they can be cleared as soon as possible so we can evaluate them to see if they are the right implements,” Hussein said.

Despite earlier hiccups in preparing the technical equipment, including the D-section, the committee has managed to overcome these challenges. Hussein reported that the D-area, which was giving them a lot of headaches, is almost complete, with only painting remaining. The contractor is also working on the javelin runway, laying the synthetic track and making markings.

The main track at Moi Stadium, Kasarani is also basically ready after much work last week. The line markings were done by Mondo, and the training venue at Nyayo is moving at a fast pace. The committee is also working on installing a pole vault and transporting a hammer cage to work on its installation.

The call room has undergone slight changes to cater for the introduction of athletes into the pitch during the event. Hussein explained that there is a tunnel just as you exit the call room, which will allow for an introduction of the athletes when they enter the pitch.

The World Under-20 Championship is set to take place from August 17-22 and will bring together thousands of junior athletes from close to 128 member federations of World Athletics.
