Businessman Suleiman Shahbal's efforts to gain favor with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho have been met with resistance from Joho's allies.
According to sources, despite public displays of camaraderie between Joho and Shahbal, tensions run high behind closed doors.
Top advisors and financiers of Joho have warned the governor to be cautious in his relationship with Shahbal, who is seeking to become Joho's preferred successor.
At a heated meeting, Joho was reportedly forced to defend himself and distance himself from Shahbal, stating that his choice of successor is Likoni MP Mishi Mboko.
Those opposed to Shahbal's entry into ODM and his attempts to succeed Joho include the governor's elder brother, Abubakar Joho, and several prominent politicians, including Abdulswamad Nassir, Mboko, Ali Mbogo, Harub Khatri, William Kingi, and Najib Balala.
Shahbal's relationship with Major Idriss, a Joho political adviser, is also seen as a factor in his opposition. Idriss is said to be the one who introduced Shahbal to ODM leader Raila Odinga and is pushing for Shahbal to succeed Joho as Mombasa governor.
Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar is also eyeing the governor's seat, reportedly with the support of William Ruto's party.
