On May 21, the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) invited foreign firms to submit their Expression of Interest (EoI) for two telecom service licenses in Ethiopia. The deadline for submission was June 22, 2020.

Among the 12 firms that submitted their applications, Safaricom is one of the notable players. The company, which is part of a consortium with Vodafone, Vodacom, and other telecom operators, has a strong presence in the region.

The ECA received a total of 12 submissions, including 9 telecom operators and 2 non-telecom operators, and 1 incomplete submission. The authority has announced that it will keep the participants informed and engaged as the process moves forward.

The Ethiopian government is committed to reforming the country's telecommunications sector and enhancing its digital transformation. The move is expected to bring in new competition and investment in the sector.
