Kenya's flag will return to full mast on June 26, 2020, marking the end of a temporary order by President Uhuru Kenyatta to fly the flag at half-mast in honor of Burundi's late President Pierre Nkurunziza.

President Kenyatta had given the instructions on June 12, 2020, stating that by flying the country's flag at half-staff, Kenya would be paying tribute to Nkurunziza's life.

According to the Presidential proclamation, the flag was to be flown at half-mast from dawn on June 13, 2020, until sunset on the day of Nkurunziza's interment.

Nkurunziza, who ruled Burundi for nearly 15 years, died of a cardiac arrest on June 8, 2020, just two weeks before he was expected to officially hand over power to his successor, Evariste Ndayishimiye.

The Burundi Government had urged the public to line the streets in a show of respect as the hearse carrying the late leader traveled from Karusi hospital to Gitega stadium for the last honors.
