On May 28th, 2020, a peaceful protest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, turned violent when police opened fire on demonstrators, leaving a 17-year-old Kenyan-American girl, Sharon Morara, with a life-altering injury.
Sharon, an 11th-grade student at Hopkins High School, was accompanying her father to demand justice for George Floyd, a 52-year-old African-American man who died after a police officer kneeled on his neck for nine minutes.
According to Sharon's mother, Rose Oboga, a bullet pierced through Sharon's left side jaw, leaving her with a cavernous wound but fortunately sparing her teeth.
Sharon was taken to a hospital in Minnesota, where she was treated and discharged the next day.
"I heard a sharp object pierce through my jaw and before I knew what it was, I lost consciousness and came down tumbling," Sharon said in an interview.
The family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Sharon's reconstructive surgery, which she desperately needs to restore her quality of life.
