On July 4, 2021, the lifeless bodies of Herman Rouwenhourst, 55, and his security guard Evans Bokoro, 23, were found in Rouwenhourst's home in the Rocco apartments in Shanzu. The DCI has since arrested two main suspects in the murder: Timothy Omondi Ngoe alias Rashid, 22, and Mary Nekesa Ambani, 33.
According to the DCI, the suspects have confessed to the murder and implicated Rouwenhourst's wife, Riziki Cherono, in the plot. The police allege that Cherono had proposed a divorce to her husband, but she did not take it well and hatched a plan to eliminate him.
The suspects allegedly planned and executed the murder under Cherono's instructions. They broke into the safe and stole over Sh3 million. Rashid used the proceeds to construct a four-roomed house at an estimated cost of over Sh1.5 million and furnished it with over Sh500,000.
The DCI alleges that Cherono staged a kidnapping by leaving her in the couple's Toyota Probox around Serena hotel. Forensic analysis placed Rashid at the scene of the murder and around Serena Hotel. The police recovered several items, including a live round of 9mm calibre, a bullet head of 9mm calibre, blood-stained shoes, a pair of handcuffs, several mobile phones, and SIM cards.
The suspects will be arraigned on Monday, July 25, on murder charges.
