Neil Wigan, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, has announced his impending departure from Nairobi.
Thus, bringing a close to his two-year tenure at the end of August 2025.
In a heartfelt statement released, Wigan described his time in the country as a “whirlwind” and expressed his deep regret at having to leave.
Mr. Wigan will be taking on a new, high-level role in London as the Director General Strategy and Delivery at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
His exit comes after a period of significantly strengthened diplomatic and economic ties between the United Kingdom and Kenya.
A Tenure of Milestones and Partnership
Neil Wigan, who arrived in Kenya in August 2023, has overseen a period of dynamic engagement between the two nations.
In his farewell message, he reflected on a number of key milestones achieved during his watch.
Also, highlighting the deepening “Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership.
Among the notable events he cited were:
- The historic visit of His Majesty King Charles III to Kenya in late 2023, a trip that underscored the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
- The formal signing of the new Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership, which laid out a clear roadmap for cooperation on trade, investment, technology, and security.
- Joint security cooperation, including the training of Kenyan marines by the UK to enhance maritime security.
- Significant infrastructure investments, such as the Nairobi Railway City project, which received vital UK support.
Wigan’s message was one of immense gratitude and optimism for Kenya’s future.
“I have also seen first-hand the incredible potential of Kenya and her people,” he stated, recalling visits to various parts of the country—from participating in a Maasai elders meeting to witnessing the impact of UK-supported women-led businesses in Wajir.
He noted his regret at not being able to visit all of Kenya’s counties but expressed his unwavering belief that “Kenya’s future is bright.
“ He concluded his message with a warm “Asanteni sana na kwaherini” (Thank you very much and goodbye).
A New Role and Interim Leadership
Mr. Wigan’s new role as Director General Strategy and Delivery at the FCDO in London is a significant promotion.
Therefore, underscoring his distinguished career in the diplomatic service.
Prior to his posting in Kenya, he served as the British Ambassador to Israel, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The British High Commission has confirmed that a successor will be announced in the coming months.
In the interim, the Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya, Dr. Ed Barnett, will serve as Chargé d’Affaires.
Therefore, ensuring continuity in the UK’s diplomatic relations with Kenya.
The departure of Neil Wigan marks a moment of transition in the strong bilateral relationship between Kenya and the UK.
