Governments around the world are hacking phones to spy on citizens voicing dissent using Israeli spyware called Pegasus, an Al Jazeera Fault Lines investigation revealed.

This comes as WhatsApp said a security breach allowed users phones to be infected with spyware.

Telegram's founder Patrov also last week accused WhatsApp of creating a backdoor for the US Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to exploit, stating that 'WhatsApp will never be secure'.
