Taxi hailing mobile application Taxify has today rebranded to “Bolt” in what has been described as a move made in preparation for “its next stage of growth”.

Just recently, the company ventured into the electronic scooter business and getting rid of the word “Taxi” is believed to be a decision meant to show consumers that the company will now be providing multiple transportation options beyond private cars.

According to co-founder Markus Villig, the rebrand from Taxify to Bolt is serving a few purposes. The new name “bolt” implies speed, as well as electricity.

“We are bullish that the future is fully electric and so we wanted a name that moved us away from the combustion engine,” said Mr. Villig.

The app, however, has been marred by scandals and controversies especially in Africa where its drivers have been associated with all sorts of ill and to some extent criminal behaviour.

Not much has been said about the application's safety going forward following the rebrand and consumers will definitely be worried about that if previous incidences are anything to go by.
