Radio and media personality Nancy Omweri has issued a formal legal notice against controversial blogger Edgar Obare, accusing him of publishing false and malicious allegations that she was romantically involved with former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i.
In a demand letter dated October 13, 2025, and signed by her lawyer Danstan Omari, Omweri accuses Obare of giving a platform to his followers on his social media pages, particularly Instagram’s BNN Basic and his Telegram channel, to circulate defamatory material targeting her personal life. According to the letter, the publications in question were posted on October 6, referencing a link shared on Telegram under the hashtags #NancyOmweri and #BNNBasic.
The posts, accompanied by her photograph, suggested she had a child with the former Cabinet Secretary.
The publication quickly spread, attracting numerous comments and shares, which Omweri says subjected her to intense public humiliation, mental anguish, and reputational harm.
The lawyer contends that the material portrayed Omweri as “a woman of loose morals” who was “disloyal and devoid of integrity.”
The letter further asserts that these statements are entirely false, fabricated, and calculated to tarnish her image before her employer, colleagues, and the public.
Mr. Omari notes that his client is a well-known journalist with a reputable career and that Obare’s publications were intended to ridicule and destroy her standing in the media fraternity.
He further references Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, No. 5 of 2018, which criminalises the publication of false information likely to damage a person’s reputation, carrying penalties of up to ten years imprisonment or a fine not exceeding five million shillings.
Through her lawyer, Omweri has demanded that Obare admits liability, issues a public apology, deletes the defamatory content from all his platforms, and pays KSh 10 million in damages within seven days.
The letter warns that failure to comply within the stipulated period will lead to immediate legal proceedings seeking redress for reputational damage, legal costs, and any further harm arising from continued publication.
It also formally cautions Obare against sharing the notice with third parties other than his legal representatives.
Omweri maintains that the allegations against her are entirely baseless and says she is prepared to challenge Obare in court, demanding that he produce evidence to substantiate his claims.
The case adds to a growing list of defamation disputes involving high-profile personalities and social media commentators, reflecting the tension between Kenya’s digital gossip culture and the legal limits of online expression.
