Justice Lucy Mbugua of the Environment and Lands Court A rogue Chinese contractor is facing a jail sentence for defying a court order on the Sh3 billion construction project of the Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Training in Karen, Nairobi.
Executives of the China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation are accused of acting in contempt of court orders issued by Justice Lucy Mbugua of the Environment and Lands Court on August 2.
In her ruling, Justice Mbugua instructed the Chinese firm to stop further construction of the site pending the hearing of the case lodged by members of the Karen and Lang'ata District Association.
The residents say that despite the order, China Jiangxi Corporation continued with the project, which has prompted them to commence contempt of court proceedings against the contractor.
They have also written to the Chinese Ambassador in Nairobi, asking him to instruct the contractor to adhere to the court order.
“This is a violation of the justice system in Kenya and a blatant disrespect of the court orders issued,” the letter by the association reads in part.
They claim the development is a threat to the character of the residential area of Karen, adding that its magnitude and scale is affecting those adjacent to the project.
The institute is being set up as a department at the University of Nairobi (UoN).
UoN has since renewed its collaboration with the Centre for Parliamentary Studies and Training for another five years to offer its fit-for-purpose and relevant programmes to Parliamentarians and Staff of Parliament.
