Contract staff who have worked for more than 5 years, some even 8 years are the first casualty of a Kenya Airways retrenchment that is being blamed on COVID-19.
"The effects of Covid-19 has adversely affected our operations as an airline which has seen us significantly suspend and reduce our operations including the suspension of our training program", a letter seen by nyakundireport.com said in part.
As we reported yesterday, contract staff are the most affected yet they are the least cost in terms of human resources to the company.
KQ was struggling even before COVID-19 came to these shores.
In the financial year ended December 2019, KQ blamed rising costs for the sh13 billion loss.
The fact that the loss was reported in the year before Covid-19 pandemic grounded the aviation sector promises the airline more painful days ahead.
Staff facing the sack are now asking the government to intervene to save them as most of them 'consume little money with great benefit to the company because of the many years of training'. This is a letter that has been given to some KQ staff who were on contract. More letters to follow. It is alleged that some of those who will be affected are those who have worked for Kenya Airways under contract. Some of whom have worked for 5 years, 6 years, 7 years and even 8 years. They have been so loyal to the Company yet our management can't see this. These people will be affected so much mentally owing to the fact that they have wasted all these years yet they will exit with nothing. Needless to say these are quite young people whom the Company can rely on and are much experienced. They get peanuts which means after the company will not save any money in the long run.
