The battle to control Migori County has taken a new twist after Governor Okoth Obado complained of plans to use police to intimidate his allies.
The embattled governor claims the police will not be used to provide security but to threaten ward representatives and county officials opposed to plans by ODM to impeach him.
Obado said a meeting was held in Kisii over the weekend where Migori Senator Ochilo Ayacko met MCAs and warned them to either support the impeachment motion or be denied party tickets in 2022.
He further claimed that a 10-point impeachment motion was drafted with the help of a former magistrate at the meeting.
“Ayacko met MCAs and fake party delegates to discuss the motion. He warned them to toe the line or face the consequences. They are also scheming to oust Speaker Boaz Okoth and take unspecified action against MCAs,” Obado said.
The governor who has managed to successfully go against ODM waves in the region twice claimed the party will use the police to cause chaos and interfere with voting when the motion is tabled.
The impeachment was crafted by ODM days after Obado was charged with corruption but has stalled for two weeks creating anxiety in Migori.
“The impeachment motion will be dead on arrival, Ayacko should keep off and respect the autonomy of the county assembly,” Obado said,
Obado told ODM not to use the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and Directorate of Criminal Investigations to intimidate his supporters.
“Ayacko never been loyal to ODM. He has defected from the party twice, in 2013 and 2017. He cannot purport to be at forefront of ODM affairs in Migori,” he added.
Senator Ayacko ran unsuccessfully against Obado in 2017 and that's where their rift began. He has dismissed reports that he met the MCAs in Kisii as he accused the governor of being idle and curios.
