Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi has fired back at the Chief Justice David Maraga for advising President Uhuru Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament after it failed enact 2/3 gender rule.
Muturi said it is 'unrealistic' to call for the dissolution of the parliament just because it has failed to enact the gender law.
"We must not lose sight of the real challenges in implementing this matter and turn Parliament into a punching bag on account of gender parity," Mututi said.
Maraga had called for dissolution of Parliament in his advisory response to six petitions that sought his advice on the matter.
"The petitions are based on the ground that despite four court orders compelling Parliament to enact the legislation, Parliament has blatantly failed, refused, or neglected to do so." he said. Maraga also stated that it is his constitutional duty to advise the president as he pointed that the current Parliament does not have enough time to enact the legislation required to effect the two-third gender rule.

The failure by the parliament to enact the rule has led to several petitions being filed to challenge parliament but is still failed to enact it. "Women and men have the right to equal treatment, including the right to equal opportunities in political, economic, cultural, and social spheres." Maraga said.
