Abdiwahab Sheikh, a prominent Somali Kenyan scholar and a political commentator in the wider East/Horn of Africa region was abducted in central Nairobi, Kenya on 8th Sep 2021. Abdiwahab was a critic of Sahan Research, a controversial institute based in Nairobi. On July 20th 2021, Mr Abdiwahab expressed concerns over his life. He specifically mentioned Sahan.

The abduction of Abdiwahab is just one of those that we have witnessed in recent times. There is a company called Sahan Africa Limited, which also operates Sahan Research and Sahan Foundation. Its key work is intelligence collection. But it doesn’t have the permission to carry out intelligence work in Kenya and therefore it would be considered as conducting espionage in the country. The company is headed by Matthew Bryden, the former head of the UN Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea. A strange thing however happened, when detectives found his car, they left to get a towing vehicle, but when they came back, the remains of the Range Rover was missing.
