After several hours in limbo at Frankfurt, lawyer Miguna Miguna will land into the country. His return sets the stage for what will be an interesting and engaging showdown with BBI heads, former premier Raila Odinga and the President of the Republic, Uhuru Kenyatta.
In a tweet sent out at 8.31 PM on January 7th, Miguna Miguna shared a photo of himself on board a plane. “HOMEBOUND. Unbowed. Dynamic. Resourceful.” He captioned. The barrister stated that he expected to touch down at 9.45 AM, January 8th.
“Kenyan by birth and right. Kenyans are not slaves. Freedom must come through the fearless pursuit of truth and justice. See you in Nairobi.” Read the tweet. FIERCE CRITIC Miguna Miguna has emerged as one of the fiercest critics of opposition chief, Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta. He has repeatedly trashed the BBI. In his latest tweets, Miguna Miguna dumped on Uhuru Kenyatta’s and Raila Odinga’s ‘fight on corruption’. He stated that the two were using the BBI to perpetuate poverty and despotism.
Miguna has repeatedly called Uhuru Kenyatta a despot. He relived the moments in 2018 when police invaded his house subjected him detention before they deported him. The deportation has been immortalised in the ‘I’m not boarding’ line. EXILED AND BBI FORMATION The government exiled Miguna on March 2018 for the role he played in the mock swearing-in of Raila Odinga as the people’s president on January 30th, 2018. They claimed he had renounced his Kenyan citizenship after taking up a Canadian passport. Miguna denies these claims.
Then an insider of Raila Odinga, he stood by Raila’s side as the then opposition kingpin took a symbolic oath. The oath was the culmination of agitations of electoral justice. The opposition felt that the moment was a turning point for electoral justice. After the swearing-in, there would have been people’s assembly in various counties as NRM took root. Instead ended up being an anticlimax.
In March that same year, Raila and the President would be holed up in a secretive meeting. They emerged with the Building Bridges Initiative in tow. They claimed this would address the electoral injustices that came to a head after the 2017 general elections, with the ghosts of the 2007 post-election violence fresh in many Kenyan’s memories. Critics of the two politicians have, however, called the BBI a realignment of political chairs, the end product being new life for old political players.
Miguna then turned on Raila after the head of opposition failed to provide much-needed support to him as he was unceremoniously deported and exiled forcefully. The lawyer went on to turn the heat on the opposition chief on his Twitter and in his book ‘Treason: The Case Against Tyrants and Renegades.’
Thus, Miguna’s presence in the country promises to crank up the heat as he continues with his sustained, bare-knuckles shots at Uhuru and Raila. FRIEND TURNED FOE Miguna was at one point one of the Raila’s closest allies, before a falling out in the build-up to the 2013 elections. The two would later reunite after the 2017 elections. The opposition condemned the injustices meted out to innocent Kenyans. They also declared that the elections were not free and fair.
Miguna managed to wriggle himself once more into Raila’s inner circle. He emerged as one of the figureheads in the formation of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), a political movement that called for civil disobedience in a bid to agitate for electoral justice. The barrister would then declare himself the ‘General’ of the movement. HUMA RIGHTS VIOLATION The government has shown its willingness to disregard court orders calling for them to let Miguna back into the country by denying him the chance. Human rights activists term this as a human right violation. The lawyer also had his Kenyan passport perforated. But court orders calling for his return have allowed him to use his ID.
There is no doubt then that his presence in the country is making the BBI heads grind their teeth as their blood comes to boil. His friend turned foe turned friend again turned foe again Raila Odinga is now speaking from the government’s side. Thus, it promises to then be as engaging as it will be revealing.
