Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Okeng'o Matiang'i has on Friday in Kisii confirmed that he takes orders from Opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga. "Inche n'omogaka oyo (Raila) ngobwatia amo n'omogambi bwense (uhuru)" , loosely translated as "I only take orders from Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta", the CS said.
Matiang'i's statement brings him to sharp focus concerning the predicament of exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna who is stuck in Berlin, Germany.
On Wednesday, Miguna and a section of leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto led by Moses Kuria accused Raila of blocking the entry of Miguna in Kenya. "When President was talking of allowing Miguna during the burial of (late and former mayor Charles) Rubia, he meant every word of it, but I have information that the person who is behind Miguna's tribulations is Raila Odinga," Kuria said.
Has this now been confirmed by the utterances of Mr. Matiang'i, who addressed the congregation in Kisii for the better part of his speech?
Raila speaking later after the Interior CS said "Matiang'i ni kijana yangu, ukiambia yeye afanye kitu anafanya', to mean 'Matiangi is my son, if you give him instructions he carries them out very fast'.
The meeting in Kisii County is one of the many that will take place all over the country to popularise the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report suggestions in the coming weeks. The BBI BBI report was launched in late November by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and Raila Odinga among other leaders.
However, the William Ruto wing popularly known as Tangatanga seems to not have supported the BBI. The Tangatanga squad were accused of sabotaging the report which prompted President Uhuru to call a meeting in Sagana on November 15th, 2019.
DP Ruto insists that he supports BBI, but his words often contradict:
“Let BBI not divert us from our primary work of transforming Kenya, and making the people more economically empowered,” the DP has often reiterated, a statement that is not in tandem with all the leaders supporting the initiative. The BBI is moving to the grassroots for discussions so as to make it a people owned agenda. This is according to Raila Odinga and Mount Kenya supporters of the initiative. Mr Odinga said delegates from the country’s eight regions – Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley, Coast, North Eastern, Eastern, Nairobi and Central – will have an opportunity to recommend changes before the report is taken to a referendum. “At least 500 people from each region will meet to discuss the recommendations. Their final draft will then be taken to Kenyans to decide on the future of the report,” Mr Odinga told a gathering in Waondo village during the burial of Ms Dorcas Ajwang’, mother of Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ and Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang’.
