Students outside the Maseno University main gate Students studying at the Maseno University have accused the institution of running a money-minting scheme, claiming that they have been duped into paying large sums of money and receiving standards of education that do match the premium price charged by the college.
A source who wrote to this blog on Monday, February 20, 2023 explained that students who enroll in the university are required to pay fees first before registering for courses, and then expected to select the units they want to take and wait for them to be availed in their portals.
However, after the students pay the required fee of Ksh 7,200 per unit, they are then told that the units they have selected "have not met the required quorum" leaving them without access to the course material or exams.
This has led to frustration among student as they end up paying Ksh 50,000 and unable to get their money back.
They apparently have to wait for up to two years for the said quorum to be met, after which the courses are made available.
Due to these delays, many of the students are forced to spend more time than necessary to complete their studies at the university with some taking up to seven years to graduate.
Furthermore, the source claims that the university is notorious for missing results, which sometimes take up to a year to be released.
In some instances, the results are lost, and the administration forces the affected students to redo the exams.
The source goes on to reveal that on registration, students are informed that they need 55 units to graduate, but in reality, they are required to do 64 units.
This has resulted in many students taking up to seven years to complete their studies.
The source has urged students to stay away from Maseno University and has shared screenshots of students lamenting their experiences at the institution. We reached out to Maseno University for a comment, but we have not received any response as of the time of publishing.
As we await a response from the university, we urge students to exercise caution when choosing their institutions of higher learning and to carry out due diligence before making any payments or commitments.
