Malindi crime: Prison officer assaulted and injured by seniors.

A Prison Warder narrowly escaped death on Friday night after he was allegedly assaulted by his seniors at the Malindi GK Prison. The warder Peter Ndirangu a constable who reportedly differed with the two seniors was first hit with the butt of a pistol then later after the scuffle, his body was rammed by a Police land cruiser which had come at the prison over the matter. Ndirangu sustained serious injuries in the head, legs, waist, back and the spinal cord and is currently admitted at the Malindi Sub County hospital in critical condition. Journalists visited the officer at the Male ward of the hospital and found him in pains as he could neither sit, or even walk to the washrooms. He was being assisted by his wife Mercy Ndirangu and a friend who have been with him since the incident took place at 7 Pm on Friday. The officer revealed that the seniors who assaulted him had a grudge with him adding that one had previously threatened to ‘kill him, slash his body into pieces and put the remains in a sack before surrendering to the police,” he said. Narrating his ordeal at the hospital bed Ndirangu said on Friday evening he was called by the two senior officers of the rank of SP upon arriving from Malindi town at the mess. He said since he had been threatened before he refused to go where the officers were drinking but one of them chased him and hit him with the butt of his pistol leaving him with serious injuries on the head. “I then rushed to report the matter to the office, but little did I know that they had called the police, I refused to board the police vehicle,’’ he said. Ndirangu said the officer pushed him down behind the police land cruiser which rammed into his body from the back and forward before leaving him for the dead. All this happened as the wife watched forcing her to shout for help after the seniors fled in the police land cruiser. Ms. Ndirangu said she at first thought her husband had died and friends who responded rushed him to hospital. She pleaded with the authorities to transfer her husband to another hospital to get specialized treatment. Coast regional Prison Commandant James Ngaira confirmed the incident saying the officer was injured after differing with the seniors. He said already investigations were in top gear with a view to establishing the cause of the assault adding that serious action will be taken against the officers involved. “I am aware there is an officer who was assaulted police have launched investigations and action will be taken quickly against those involved,’’ he said.
