The late Paul Gicheru The late Lawyer Paul Gicheru, who was a suspect in the International Criminal Court (ICC) did not leave any money in any of the six bank accounts listed in his name.
Gicheru passed away on September 26, 2022.
According to his lawyer, at the time of his death, Gicheru's estate was worth an estimated Sh132 million, which included various properties and shares in Cedar Dairies Farm.
His widow, Ruth Wokabi, had moved to court seeking the release of money from her late husband's accounts to pay tuition fees for her three sons who are studying in the United Kingdom.
The urgency of the matter was that the sons were likely to lose their place in university if the fees were not paid, and they would be declared destitute in a foreign country.
Through her lawyer John Khaminwa, Wokabi requested the court to make an order for the release of Sh4 million from Diamond Trust Bank to pay for her sons' education.
Khaminwa informed the court that Gicheru managed several bank accounts in his name, as well as others in the name of the law firm Gicheru and Company Advocates, where he was the sole proprietor.
However, when the court ordered the branch managers of three banks to supply Wokabi with statements of the balances in the six accounts, they were found to be empty.
In a letter addressed to one of the universities where Wokabi's sons are studying, Khaminwa requested tuition remission or waiver due to the family's current financial situation following Gicheru's death.
He stated that the bereavement had had an immense adverse effect on the family, exacerbated by the fact that Gicheru was the main breadwinner and responsible for paying the school fees.
Khaminwa further vouches for the boy’s character, telling the university that he has a sound academic record with leadership and interpersonal skills gained through his active extracurricular participation.
