HI,Please help escalate the matter below regarding KRA Customs Officers at MOI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.
There are two specific female officers by the name of LAILA and DOROTHY. They have been stationed at Mombasa airport for like 6 months now and harassing passengers while entering the country. They will ruin your stay or vacation as soon as they tell you to open your bags. They will make sure to check each and everything you carried and try to impose TAX on almost everything!
I am not exaggerating because I was coming home for vacation and they wanted to tax almost everything including my own shirts, claiming that we were allowed only 3 shirts whether new or used and the rest should be taxed.
So they will start to calculate tax for your clothes, few presents for your parents, wife, and children (I didn't have electronics, just a few clothes and toys), and the amount they give you will make you go crazy!
By the way the tax is around 49% . Anyways, they will come up with very high figures like Kshs 13,000 so that they can ask bribe for Kshs 7,000, which is insane.
Before the two ladies came to Mombasa, there were two old man and lady, very friendly and very fair. They would only tax what needs to be taxed, check what needs to be checked, and will understand the situation you are in, as in you had a long flight and you are tired but eager coming back to ur home country, so they will try to make the process go as smooth as possible.
But that's completely different for those two ladies. They are like the devil himself, sent specifically to ruin your arrival experience at the Mombasa International Airport! So if you refuse to give them the 7K bribe, they take the stuff and put them in their store, give you a KRA receipt of 13K and tell u to pay within 7 days.
After 7 days KRA will start charging you storage fee per day! They do that to almost every passenger and Im sure many can confirm what am saying.
