According to a report that is currently tabled in parliament, Major Kenyan universities failed to remit about Sh19 billion taken from employees' salaries as statutory deductions.
The money which is supposed to be remitted to National Hospital Insurance Funds (NHIF), National Social Security Funds (NSSF), pension as well as SACCOs is nowhere to be found.
Withholding the biggest amount is the University of Nairobi. the Institute of higher learning allegedly has dues worth Sh5.5 billion that continue to accumulate in recent months.
Juja based the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is first runners up with its highest pending bills worth Sh3.5 billion.
Coming in at third with sh2.7 billion is Kenyatta University followed closely by Egerton and Moi University who owe these statutory bodies Sh2 billion and Sh1.3 billion respectively.
Most affected by the lack of remissions are employees who have retired.
Recently, Struggling government broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was on the spot over Sh2.7 billion that employees claim was deducted from their salaries but failed to be remitted to their retirement benefits scheme.
This resulted in the broadcaster being taken to the Employment Court in Nairobi by trustees of the fund.
