Kenya Methodist University Financial Woes Continues As Meru Campus Students Decry Substandard Lectures

The Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) started showing financial strain in early 2010s. By 2018, the university was reportedly planning to sell its Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) building – KEMU Hub. The institution retrenched some staff, auctioneers took several vehicles and the university management was forced to close three campuses – in  Kisii, Nyeri and Nakuru. Vice Chancellor Prof Henry Kiriamiti, at that time (2017), wrote in the letter to students and staff, that KeMU is undertaking a “restructuring process to enhance its effectiveness and competitiveness.” Below is a story of hardship, under-achievement and pain for the students at the Main campus in Meru Town. Hi there Mr. Prezo, I am a medical lab student from Kenya Methodist University, Main campus, in Meru. This campus is letting medical students down! To start with, our labs have no standard reagents and we are using expired reagents some of which expired 4 years ago. We also don’t have enough lectures. Some lecturers teach only less units and it is all dictation without practicals. lecturing is taking five units of which he has know how about it's a matter of coming class with tablet and dictating. The worst part of it is that there are students of medical lab that are supposed to be in attachment right now, but the whole semester they have been idle, reason being we haven't received our indexing card that we paid back in 2017. We have an unreliable Head of Department (HOD) who is never in his office or even in School. You will only find his secretary. Several nursing students who are self sponsored have transferred to Mount Kenya University (MKU) and Egerton University as they are not taken to clinicals at all. Government sponsored students are truly suffering, they are the victims here because they have to bare with it. Students are required to pay same amount of fee even when one is doing just two or one unit. The campus is taking advantage of government students here to ease its financial dramas. What I advise is that medical students should shun this campus under current management to be sincere. The ate the money for our indexing card that we paid back 2017 that's why comrades are stuck at Meru Campus.
