KAA in trouble as Union issues notice of strike

Moss Ndiema, Secretary-General, Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has given a notice to down tools beginning 4th May 2022. Through a statement seen by nyakundireport.com, KAWU accuses Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) of neglecting to implement the 2016-2019 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). "Pursuant to the provisions of Article 41 (2)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010. Section 76 (a), (b) and (c) of the Labour Relations Act 2007 as read together with Section 78 (1) (e) of the said Act, and all other enabling provisions of the law. We wish to formally notify you that all unionisable employees of the Authority shall go on strike after the expiry of seven (7) days from today, 26th April 2022. This action is necessitated by the Authority's failure to conclude and implement the 2016-2019 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which was negotiated and agreed with the Union in 2019. Please be notified accordingly", the letter signed by KAWU secretary General Moss Ndiema stated. Other protests In early 2019, KAWU successful protested the merger of loss-making Kenya Airways and KAA , alleging irregularities in the hiring of staff among other things. By March, more than 5,000 members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union went on strike, stalling operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. May travellers were forced to cancel or reschedule their flights.
