CAPTION: Gordwins Agutu after he was booked at the DCI headquarters yesterday Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have confirmed that serial fraudster Gordwins Agutu is behind bars again.
Through a public statement issued on Thursday 3rd February 2021, the agency disclosed that the controversial Network Action Against Corruption (NAAC) Director was nabbed on Wednesday afternoon during an extortion attempt on city businessman Isaac Wandere of WanderJoy Party.
During the raid at WanderJoy Party headquarters along Kiambu road, Agutu was found alongside his accomplice David Mburu while illegally masquerading as anti-corruption officers. Pretending to be anti-graft agents, Agutu and his crew boldly walked straight into the Director's office and demanded a bribe in order to allegedly go slow on a land fraud case against the proprietor Isaac Wandere.
But before their illegal deal went through, sleuths who were just 2 kilometres immediately arrived at the scene of the crime.
Within no time, all of Agutu's men in black who had sealed off the compound pretending to be VVIP members of a sophisticated security detail fled away. Agutu first came into the limelight in September 2017, when the public raised suspicions about him after reports surfaced that he had previously been arrested for being in possession of many staff identification cards including one from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Kenya Revenue Authority, and the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board. He had been arrested for allegedly masquerading as a Senior Superintendent of Police attached to the Criminal Investigations Department.
While masquerading as a surveillance officer in the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Agutu is alleged to have closed down several hospitals for allegedly not meeting certain regulatory requirements.
At the time, police also noted that he had attempted to abduct John Ngugi, the proprietor of Sidai Oleng club, Kiambu Road, on January 26, 2022, over undisclosed investigative cases that he was conducting against him.
Detectives have been granted custodial orders to detain the suspect until Monday next week when the suspect will take a plea.
Any person who may have fallen victim to the suspect’s tricks is urged to report to the DCI headquarters Serious Crimes Unit to file their reports.
