Police have arrested a man who stabbed his wife 20 times and killed her yesterday morning.
Police sources say the suspect attempted to hide his wife’s body in a room before he was discovered and arrested.
The killing sparked a huge uproar especially among women leaders who called for strict enforcement of laws on gender-based violence.
Most of those interviewed blamed substance abuse for the rising cases of domestic violence in the county.
Hindia Hussein, a nominated MCA in the Mandera County Assembly, said time has come for everyone to stand up against gender-based violence.
Ms Hussein said the local dispute resolution mechanism dubbed Maslaha favours culprits, especially those with the financial means to navigate through a criminal case.
“We are saddened by this incident. This is unusual for Muslim communities. We want the law to take its full course,” Hussein said.
Mandera OCPD Erick Ngetich said when police on patrol were alerted, they found the 28-year-old woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
“We have arrested the suspect and he will be arraigned,” said Mr Ngetich.
He noted that a post-mortem had been conducted and the body released for burial according to Islamic laws.
Ward representatives who spoke to journalists said they will pass legislation at the county assembly that will address cases of domestic violence.
“Men have forgotten their responsibilities. It is women who are fending for their families while men are engaging in drugs that lead to such kind of violence,” said Sokorey Maalim another MCA.
Police urged the women to report cases of violence at home.
