By CORRESPONDENT , NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 23 – The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Board has suspended all new procurements following an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on massive corruption scandals. DCI boss George Kinoti said his office is investigating tenders worth Sh2.9 billion, leading to the board’s decision that was announced late Friday.
The DCI has raised queries on how Sh500 million was spent on the Makongeni goods shed project, manufacture of concrete barriers at Sh1.4 billion and the Sh800 million Kisumu port revitalization project among others.
“The Board has, therefore, suspended all the new procurements in the Authority with immediate effect, until further notice,” said KPA board Chairman Joseph Kibwana.
Kibwana said he board is also reviewing the leadership and management processes and internal control measures to improve service delivery at KPA.
Top KPA officials, among them Managing Director Daniel Manduku, Operations General Manager William Rutto and senior works officer Anthony Muhanji are implicated in the scandals, according to DCI Kinoti.
Others are principal civil engineer Bernard Nyobange and works officer Juma Chigulu have been mentioned in the scandals.
All have denied the claims.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the DCI have on several occasions summoned top KPA officials to shed light on the various matters raised.
Kibwana said KPA is facilitating its staff to honour summons issued by the EACC and DCI.
