A source has sent us information about an illegal liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling station in Nairobi.
The company which goes by the name Swift Energy Distributors Limited, registration Number CPR/2011/62772, whose directors are named as Talib Zein Salimin and Musa Abdullahi Ali, both foreigners from Uganda and Britain respectively was found to be dealing in; refilling all types of major gases i.e. K-Gas, ProGas, and others.
A vehicle used to transport the gases from the ‘factory’ a Toyota KBG 141V, belonging to a Daniel Gichuhi Wachira was also pictured carrying various gas brands to be distributed to unsuspecting clients in Nairobi.
It was not clear where the gas re-filling station is located, but an aerial google photo shows it to be somewhere in Industrial area. They include, explosion due to leaks, loss of money due to the half-refilling of the gas, etc, some of these re-filling station dangerously hide inside residential areas, posing great danger unsuspecting tenants.
In September, this site documented how Kenyans online called out the illegal LPG refilling traders.
The cartels have been accused of illegally importing cooking gas through porous border points and taking advantage of the transition period before the new, stringent rules are enforced, to set up illegal refilling dens in various parts of the city, including in residential areas, to make a killing.
After smuggling the cooking gas, which largely falls below local quality standards, the illegal dealers skew the market by offering attractive rates, thereby attracting unsuspecting consumers.
In the same month, a supermarket in Kawangware was found selling hundreds of rebranded cylinders belonging to various oil marketing companies in a raid that saw the owner of the store arrested and later released.
A local daily has accused Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority Director General Pavel Oimeke, who has been blaming weaker regulations for the existence of LPG cartels, of failing to respond to their queries on the matter.
The government has remained mum on the issues raised by Kenyans online in September.
However, with this new expose’ we hope that the government will move with speed to arrest the owners of the below illegal gas refiling station.
