An Air New Zealand flight between Wellington and Tauranga has landed safely after emergency services were put on stand-by following reports the flight was operating with just one engine.

A spokesperson for Air NZ told Newshub the pilots had elected to shut down one of its engines as a precaution due to an indication on the flight deck of a potential engine issue.

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded just after 1pm (new Zealand time).

Air NZ said Q300 aircraft are certified to operate on one engine and can safely do so, and pilots are trained to deal with this type of scenario.

The airline said its standard procedure for emergency services to be on stand-by, however this incident "wasn't an emergency landing," a spokesperson said.
